Macular Degeneration

Regular eye examinations are important as health checks and will detect early signs of the condition.

Most forms of Macular Degeneration are unfortunately not treatable but early detection can help adaptation and also allow people to make lifestyle changes that could slow the rate of visual loss.

Although there may be no currently available cure, Macular Degeneration will still leave you with some usable vision and there are various aids that can help you make the most of the vision that you have.

MACULAR DEGENERATION

Regular eye examinations are important

Macular Degeneration is the most common cause of blindness in the UK affecting about 10% of people over 65 and can occur in younger people as well. It is a condition that effects the central part of your vision and makes it difficult to see detail although peripheral vision is maintained.

Magnifiers/LVA’s

There are a wide range of magnifiers to help with different tasks. If you are beginning to struggle with a hobby or pastime due to visual loss caused by Macular Degeneration or any other cause then do not think that you have to give up.

With the right aid, advice and some perseverance you may find that you can continue doing most things that you enjoy. Our practices carry a varied selection of magnifiers and our Dispensing Opticians can advise you on the most appropriate for your need.

If you have any problems with your vision that can’t be solved with spectacles then it is worth asking for some expert advice on what may be available to help you.

E-Scoop

The E – Scoop spectacle lens is an exciting new addition to the aids that can be used to help with macular degeneration.

Its special design moves the light entering the eye away from the damaged part of the retina onto a part of the retina that works better. It also is specially curved to create some magnification and has a high contrast tint which will help with glare.

We are able to demonstrate the effects of the E – Scoop lens in practice quite simply with the aid of lorgnette’s made up with the E Scoop lens which we can hold over your existing glasses.
